Despite our best intentions, we are at times letting our people and, as a result, our company down.
We regularly confuse the management of people with project management: over-supervising their work or becoming distracted remedying the constantly changing drama in an organization. We miss the opportunities, as managers, to embrace the right type of conflict that makes the organization healthier, instead facilitating environments that promote the wrong type of conflict resulting in frantic behavior and organizational anxiety. We are not enabling our teams to achieve the level of excitement and purpose that their profession should bring to their lives. Our people are fearful for the wrong reasons and then look for validation from external sources or compare themselves to others, neither of which provide the confidence that they actually seek and need. We have learned these lessons the hard way.
